I hate it when teachers don't know what they're teaching

Dear Friend,

We wouldn’t necessarily say they don’t know what they’re teaching(our teachers are all supposed to be qualified to after all) but we certainly have teachers that don’t teach in the way that we expect them to. Maybe their teaching methods or styles don’t work the most effectively for you, which isn’t uncommon.

I think it really just comes down to student agency in learning, where you need to take initiative as a learner.

Some of my teachers do monthly surveys or have suggestion boxes where students can submit suggestions/feedback for them. If this is something your teacher is doing and you feel comfortable with it, I would suggest you try to voice your concerns/send in your feedback. This can help your teacher understand how the students in the class are doing and maybe adjust accordingly.

For high school students, I think a large part of your learning is heavily dependent on self management Out of classes, you should be prepared to do extra work on areas where you think you need to improve on and actively reach out for help if necessary.

I know some teachers who don’t necessarily deliver the best content during class(due to the large number of students not everyone is taken care of). However, if you go find them after class or individually they will be more than happy to help you out. That way, they could also address very specific concerns/questions of yours that they wouldn’t otherwise discuss with the whole class.

If your teacher doesn’t really help you that well, I’m sure you have friends around you who will be willing to help out. There are also plenty of resources online for you to consolidate or check your learning outside of school(youtube, Khan Academy, academic sites).

I also believe that there is a peer tutoring center here at ISB where you can get help from your peers who already have relevant experiences with what you are learning.

Wishing you the best of luck in your classes :)

Dear Letterbox
