I'm in HS, but I'm still scared to raise my hand in class. Is that normal?

Hi!

This question has probably come across many kids’ minds over the years. Participating in class can be much harder than teachers make it out to be, especially if you don’t know the people in your class personally. I would say that being scared of raising your hand in class is normal. You’re essentially bringing attention to yourself and singling yourself out in front of the class. I bet almost half the kids in the school have a fear of doing that in the back of their minds.

It may be hard to take action, but if you raise your hand enough times, it’ll become more normal to you. Try to make an effort or set small goals. For example, you can make a goal of raising your hand at least five times on Monday, then make another goal of raising your hand six times the next day.

Also, good grades are an important motivator to get you to raise your hand more often, but you should focus on your own personal development too. You’ll see yourself grow over time as you participate more. Just remember, everyone else is too busy being nervous about raising their own hands to think of someone else raising their hand.

I hope this helped in some way! :)
