Hello!
The symptoms of depression differs for everyone. Some people may lose the motivation to take care of themselves, others may shut themselves off from society as a coping mechanism. In that case, “writing depression poetry/stuff” could definitely be a sign of depression. Some people, terrified of seeking help in fear of being judged or belittled, resort to subtly calling for help through writing or another creative outlet. Other subtle signs include extreme aggression, substance abuse, and a lack of focus (Forbes). Although depression is a common mental illness, the stigma around depression and mental illnesses in general causes depression to be an obscure discussion topic. In short, depression is a “mood disorder that causes [...] persistent feeling[s] of sadness” (Mayo Clinic) and hopelessness that continues for at least 2 weeks. Depression isn’t simply being in a low mood; it does negatively impact your daily life and activities.
If you ever do notice someone close to you not acting like themselves, don’t be scared to take some time out of your day and check in on them. Send them a quick text, a little hug, some small words of encouragement. It may sound intruding or awkward at first, but rest assured the person most likely does appreciate the little check-in. Although it is impossible to assist someone in a mental health recovery if you aren’t a professional, having some outside emotional support is beneficial to one’s wellbeing.
That being said, if you do believe you have depression, please don’t be afraid to reach out for help. Reaching for help does not necessarily mean booking a therapy session; talking to a trusted adult or close friend could work. It may seem horrifying - the idea of opening up to someone, but I promise you’ll feel so much better afterwards. I believe in you! :]
Take care,
Dear Letterbox
