What are some good options for my first watch?

Hello!

That is a great Question!

What many students might not realize is that watches are not simply instruments that tells time, but instead, they are fashion accessories, personalities, something you can argue with your friends over, and so much more. However, I know that many students are looking into getting their first watch, but have no idea where to start. So, we’re writing this article to try to help you if you have similar concerns.

Although the Apple Watch will be forever be hailed as the quintessential students’ watch, there’s a couple of other timepieces at different price points that come to mind when I’m recommending a watch to students.

For students on a tighter budget, you really can’t go wrong with a Casio F-91W. It’s a classic from the 80s that’ll look good with any retro outfit. It’s god-tier, instantly recognizable, and all for an affordable price of around 100 RMB.

For those of you looking to spend a little more, I would recommend the Seiko 5 collection. The ‘5’ in the name stands for the 5 characteristics that every watch in the collection has - “an automatic movement, a day/date window, significant water resistance for sporting activities, a crown at 4 o'clock, and durable case and bracelet”. The price will depend on the specific model, but coming in at around 1500 RMB, this should be a great first watch for any high school student.

At a higher price point, there’s the Tissot PRX Powermatic 80. It’s a Gerald Genta-esque piece with an 80 hour power reserve and a tastefully finished case, dial, and integrated bracelet, which you can get for around 4500 RMB. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

Lastly, for those of you who are willing to spend a pretty penny on a watch that will last you a lifetime, there’s the Tudor Black Bay 41. The slab-style case and classical dimensions will elevate your style to a whole new level. It comes with a hefty price tag of 20000 RMB, but for those of you who are willing to make this long-term investment, I can confidently assure you that you’ll have yourself a high-horology piece that you won’t be able to take your eyes off.

This is just a list of some of the watches that you may look into to be your first watch. But remember, there are so so so many other watches out there for you to explore. Finding a watch that you like might take some time, but you’ll feel great when you find a fine timepiece that truly resonates with you. Best of luck!

We hope this answer helped you!
