Why is school so hard?

Greetings,

No doubt, this question has been a passing thought through the minds of every student in existence - perhaps while staring at a blank word document for 3 hours, struggling to answer the simple “does development mean progress?”. Or perhaps while attempting to cram in some last-minute trigonometry review, only to discover your brain has not retained any information at all? Whatever the scenario may be, you may have had the overwhelming urge to want to drop out of school at some point during your academic career. Don’t worry; you aren’t alone in this.

Why is school so hard anyway? Of course, there is no right or wrong answer, nor a “better” or “worse” answer to this question. To get an idea of how this question could be interpreted, I interviewed two fellow ISB high school students; one individual stated that “the academic [challenges] - [...]it is torturing us”. In contrast, their friend attempted to justify the difficulties of school as “it is meant to be challenging to prepare us for the ‘real world’”. As demonstrated, multiple perspectives stem from this question; nonetheless, it is a widespread opinion that school can indeed be a struggle for many students alike.

It may seem tempting to just drop out, but discontinuing your education could ultimately be problematic, as “education plays a significant role to plan your future as a successful person in life” (Why Education is the Fundamental Key For Success). Although the school workload cannot be lightened, you could instead find reasons to find school more pleasant. There are multiple ways to make school just a tad bit more enjoyable. For example, you could join extracurricular classes such as clubs or sports to help reduce school stress. Alternatively, friends could be another reason that allows you to look forward to coming to school. One day, you might reminisce back to your high school days and be glad that your high-school self did not follow through with the decision to drop out. Best of luck!

Best wishes,

Dear Letterbox
