My parents want me to do one thing, but I want to do something else. What should I do?

Hi,

Thank you for the question.

It depends because everyone's parents are different. But the best thing to do is to sit them down for a talk and tell them how you feel. Pick a good time to ask them, and wait to ask right after they leave work. Parents typically like to have a few moments after a hard day at the office. They will appreciate you for respecting their time and not bombarding them with an argument.

Take the time to listen and understand why your parents want you to do a particular thing. They may have valid reasons and concerns you need to be aware of. Express your desires and explain why you want to do something else. Be respectful and open in your communication, emphasizing your reasons and the potential benefits. Look for areas of compromise or alternative solutions that can satisfy both parties. Is there a way to incorporate what you want while meeting your parents' expectations?

If you're having difficulty finding a resolution, consider seeking advice from a trusted adult, such as a family member, teacher, or counselor. They can provide insights or mediate the conversation. Reflect on the pros and cons of each choice. Consider your decision's short-term and long-term consequences and how it aligns with your values and goals.

Generally, your parents only want the best for you, so even if you begin to get frustrated, you should still consider the things that they're saying. Obviously, you don't have to accept 100% of their suggestions, but they may say something helpful that irritates you now but will ultimately benefit you in the future.

I hope this response has answered your question,
